What We Do
Christmas Stockings for Active Local Military
Adopt A Sox’s (AAS) mission is to show support of our actively serving Montana service men and women at Christmas, to show them that their own communities think of them and appreciate their sacrifices. To do this, we invite the community to donate a wide range of specific useful items, tasty treats, and fun distractions.
A team of as many as 100 volunteers organizes the donations, and prepares them for distribution. The image above shows an example of the contents of the “Christmas Stocking” boxes that we send to each of our service men and women deployed overseas. For Adopt A Sox purposes, deployed is defined as a Montanan stationed overseas whose location requires a military address (APO, FPO, etc.).
Troops serving in the US receive an overstuffed Christmas stocking of goodies. All of it is donated by our community — individuals, businesses, and groups — or purchased with donated money, and lovingly packaged by nearly 100 volunteers.
The Impact of Our Gifts
We regularly receive letters from commanding officers of our Montana units sharing their experience with how the men and women they lead are emotionally refreshed by this gesture from the community. Individual soldiers write letters expressing their appreciation of the feel of home in Montana that the gifts provide. We also get visits at events from soldiers once they've returned home who humble us with their thanks, when it is they to whom we all owe our thanks. Click on the image of the letter for an example of what we receive.
We also solicit monetary donations to help with shipping costs, for each of these big boxes costs up to $50 to ship! For troops not deployed, we raise money to include a gift card from a local grocery store. Donations of money can be made at any Big Sky Western Bank, or by mail to P.O.Box 6113, Bozeman, MT 59771.
Adopt A Sox is a 501(c)(3) meaning that your donation is tax deductible. Check with your tax professional to determine how this affects your specific situation.
